Sweetbitter is a novel that I’d been seeing and hearing about for a while now. It was on every must-read list so I decided to give it a go, even though the synopsis didn’t necessarily fit into “my type” of novel. I have to admit this was a very hard novel for me to get into, as the plot didn’t really grasp me initially, to be honest.

I will say that this is incredibly written, beautiful even. However, it still wasn’t my type of book when it comes down to it. This is a coming-of-age story of a girl named Tess who moves to New York to work in the restaurant industry and all of the trials and tribulations, the ups and the many downs of joining a restaurant family and navigating her way.

When the book ended, I was left feeling satisfied with a story well told. But unfortunately I wouldn’t consider this one of my favorites. If this kind of story appeals to you, then I highly recommend it. However, if this doesn’t sound like the kind of book you’d like to read, then I think you’re okay to pass.
